Electrical hazards place people at risk of injury or death from electrocution, electrical shocks, electrical burns, fire and explosions. Nonetheless electrical safety is taken for granted in most organizations with non-industrial settings in Ghana. The aim of this research was to assess the measure of electrical safety adopted by commercial banks in Ghana to recommend modalities to improve safety levels. The research adopted qualitative methods by distributing questionnaires and conducting interviews for staff of 22 commercial banks in the Western Region of Ghana yielding a response rate of 85.5%. Findings indicate that the commercial banks had no in-house experts and standard operating procedure for electrical work. About more than 60% of the sampled banks have no safe fire assembly point. Over 90% of the commercial banks had neither trained the staff on fire safety management nor undertaken fire drills for the staff since they considered that as interruptive to operations. 68% of staff had no idea on how to use fire extinguishers. Managements’ commitment to electrical safety among the commercial banks was low since they were more focused on financial risk management than health and safety risk management. The research recommends that instituting electrical and fire safety management system as a riskreduction strategy must be considered. These strategies include institutionalising engineering controls, increased management commitment and education on health and safety practices at the work place.
